A...Anon,

Translating Met. is often difficult.

As for Bosnia, Met. Georges was very outspoken during that conflict against what was going on, while pointing out that Patriarch Pavel also condemned the violence. The mufti of Sarajevo even came to Lebanon during the conflict to meet with Orthodox leaders there when he was unable to accept Patriarch Pavel's invitation to come to Belgrade. A big part of Met. Georges' point is to disconnect political conflict from the work of the Church.Samn!https://www.blogger.com/profile/14142811721903345946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7687886961771238263.post-34737480094533127002010-12-04T00:39:05.639-05:002010-12-04T00:39:05.639-05:00It is difficult to comment with confidence on Metr...It is difficult to comment with confidence on Metropolitan George's essay for a couple of reasons. First of all, in spite of your talents as a translator, we end up with sentences like "The second questions is are there powers in the Eastern Christian or Western Christian world that are able to put forward a church that is above political desires?" The more I think about this question, the more confused I get. However, I think that what His Eminence is trying to get at is that it may still be possible for Christians and Muslims to live together in peace is they can somehow divorce themselves from politics and history. Well, I guess so. Then again, he asserts that the Russian and Balkan Orthodox, "do not harbor enmity to Islam." Should we tell him about Chechnya or Bosnia? The accusation by those in the Middle East against the West is that we have a skewed view of history and it is often true. However, if His Eminence is any indication, it is seems to be a universal problem.I do agree that "Mutual respect in honesty is sufficient" for living together under the protection of a secular civil government.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
